I am really excited to begin a discussion on what vitamins, minerals, and other supplements can do to help bolster skin health and beauty. I wrote about vitamin C not too long ago because it plays such an important role in your skins health and its ability to heal itself.
Many times there is a deficiency in my clients contributing to some of their issues. Just yesterday someone asked about it on my Face Book Fan Page. So I am going to start with it today but were are going to talk about ALL of them over the coming days!
A myriad of scientific studies show that vitamins and minerals in all forms play an integral role in overall healthy skin and complexion, whether the source is in the form of a supplement the food choices you make, or even the skin care products you use.
"Your skin is the fingerprint of what is going on inside your body, and all skin conditions, from psoriasis to acne to aging, are the manifestations of your body's internal needs, including its nutritional needs," says Georgiana Donadio, PhD, DC, MSc, founder and director of the National Institute of Whole Health in Boston.
I have said this for years and years, your skin is the largest organ of the body and it is also the largest detoxification organ as well. Things often go awry on the skin because of something awry inside.
"There is a lot of important new research showing tremendous power of antioxidants in general, and in some specific nutrients in particular that can make an important difference in the way your skin looks and feels -- and even in how well it ages," says nutritional supplement expert Mary Sullivan, RN, co-founder of Olympian Labs. "When combined with a good diet, the right dietary supplements can help keep your skin looking not only healthy, but also years younger."
So beginning today we are going to take a close look at what you should be doing with vitamins and minerals whether this be from food, supplements, or products for skin care.
The first area we are going to look at is the vitamins that impact the way your skin LOOKS and FEELS. Vitamins C, E, A, K, and B complex all help improve skin health and appearance. Let's look at the Vitamin C first:
Sunshine in tablet form! The power of vitamin C to counter the effects of sun exposure and damage. This vitamin works by reducing the damage caused by free radicals, which are harmful byproducts of exposure sunlight, smoke, and air pollution.
Free radicals destroy and oxidize collagen and elastin, the very fibers that support the skins structure, causing wrinkles, hyper-pigmentation, sagging, and other signs of aging.
Your diet needs to always include plenty of vitamin-C rich foods (citrus and vegetables, among others), which can replace the loss of the vitamin through the skin.
You can also take vitamin C supplements, up to 500 to 1,000 milligrams of per day safely, an in some instances where health or skin is impaired up to 1500 milligrams per day (check with your doctor if you have any questions about dosage).
Vitamin C when combined with vitamin E can also protect and reverse the damage to the skin from sun exposure.
There are also topical vitamin C creams and serums to encourage collagen production, just as your body does naturally. The key this working is to use a formulation containing the L-ascorbic acid form of vitamin C, the only one that can penetrate skin layers and make the repairs.
