How To Choose A Good Cleanser For Your Skin...

I hope you are having an awesome week so far. With the posts the last few days, I've received some questions on the proper type of face wash to use.

There are so many scrubs and washes available that it can cause confusion. So I wanted to take the time today to clear a few things up and talk about what I recommend and why. :-)

When I am working with clients I always evaluate the product they are using for cleansing because the wrong product can actually contribute or even be the reason for their skin problems. Over and over again I find that the product most people use is regular bath soap. Not the best idea.

There are even myths out there about what to use for facial cleansing. I had one client who was actually using dish soap because they had read somewhere that it was better for your skin! I'm here to tell you it definitely is not.

So, no matter what type of skin you have or what skin issues you have, here are my rules for selecting and using a properly made skin cleansing product.

1. Must not contain ANY oil with the exception of olive oil or avocado oil.

2. Should NOT have any ingredient that is named sulfide, sulfite, sulfate. These are harsh salts designed to help the product foam up and are the same ingredient found in laundry detergent (we talked about this recently as well).

3. Contain any grit, grain (other than oat) or "scrub" type ingredients. These microscopically scratch and cut the skin which can allow more bacteria into the skin causing more problems or breakouts.

4. NOT contain over-drying chemicals like benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid. These ingredients that are commonly found in products for acne and exfoliation.

For most people they cause a build of up dead skin cells that block pores and contribute to poor skin health. They can be very irritating and even speed up the aging process with long-term use as well.

Using these guidelines will help you pick your products carefully to get the results you are paying your money for. The right products with the right ingredients can make all the difference.

Do you have any experience with Burt's Bees facial products? They claim to use natural ingredients and are fairly priced which I like.
